The enforcement of health and safety legislation is split between two authorities, based on the main work activity:

The Health and Safety Executive cover specialist work activities normally inaccessible to the general public; Local authorities cover many service and retail businesses.

The Health and Safety Enforcement Team works with local businesses to improve health and safety. They carry out routine inspections, provide advice and where necessary, carry out appropriate enforcement action. Accident notifications and complaints are also investigated.
