household food waste collection
Following a successful food waste trial in 2008, involving 6000 properties in the urban fringe of Norwich we decided to continue to collect food waste from the trial areas. Around 4000 more households have been added to the scheme.
The food waste scheme consists of two bins, a small container called a 'caddy' to collect food waste in the kitchen and a larger external container which is emptied on a weekly basis. Residents have been provided with compostable liners, which are designed to fit inside your kitchen caddy.

further information
In April and May 2010 monitoring was conducted to see how many residents are taking part in the food waste scheme. In the areas covered by the initial food waste trial, 69% of residents were found to be using the food waste scheme. This has fallen slightly from 73% when the trial was first launched, but is still an excellent achievement and shows how recycling food waste has become a regular habit for many Broadland residents. In the new locations, where the food waste scheme was introduced in March this year, 83% of residents are using the scheme. This is fantastic news and shows how receptive Broadland residents are to the idea of diverting their food waste from landfill.
In fact, with the addition of over 4000 households to the scheme, over 20 tonnes of food waste is being collected for recycling every week. This has a very positive environmental impact, as every tonne of food waste which is composted instead of being landfilled saves about half a tonne of carbon dioxide emissions.
