parish plans
Parish Plans emerged in 2000, following publication of the Rural White Paper, as part of a nation-wide initiative to help breathe new life into rural communities and to help local people develop and achieve a shared vision for their community. Parish Plans are still attracting interest and are a very valuable tool for looking at a variety of issues within a community.
A Parish Plan will set out a vision for how a community wants to develop and identify the actions needed to achieve that vision. The Plan will usually be developed by a group of volunteers from the community, and will involve an audit of residents' views and needs. The Plan normally covers a wide variety of subjects, including the local economy, the environment, social activities, traffic and transport, housing, health, education etc.
Parish Plans do not have any statutory weight (for example within the planning system), although they can and should be used to influence organisations’ policies and services, and they should result in an action plan to be progressed locally (with the support of others) to ensure the community achieves its vision.
